While the majority of the newest Marvel streaming series are heading straight to the Disney+ subscription streaming service, there is still one major holdover from the days of Marvel Television; Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. on Hulu! The new stop-motion adult animated series is releasing in just a few short weeks and has finally dropped its first trailer to give viewers an idea of just what to expect from the series when it hits.

Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. was created, written, and executive produced by Jordan Blum and comedian Patton Oswalt; the latter of which also voices the series titular character. The show follows the classic Marvel Comics villain of the same name, which is an abbreviation for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. M.O.D.O.K. has spent most of his time in the Marvel Comics universe as a villain, but this series is putting him directly in the spotlight and making him the unlikely hero.

You can check out the new trailer below!

As you can see in the trailer, M.O.D.O.K. is a bit different than your standard Marvel fair these days, so it makes sense that Disney would throw this series on Hulu rather than its family-friendly Disney+ service. As an adult animated series, M.O.D.O.K. feels more akin to projects like Deadpool than anything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As per usual for Marvel productions, M.O.D.O.K. didn’t pull any punches when it came to casting. Aside from the wonderfully talented Patton Oswalt voicing the series lead, the show has brought in a wealth of talent including Jon Hamm, Whoopie Goldberg, Nathan Fillion, Aimee Garcia, Ben Schwartz, Jon Daly, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Bill Hader, Sam Richardson, Melissa Fumero, and Beck Bennett – just to name a few!

Here is the show’s official synopsis:

In Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., the megalomaniacal supervillain M.O.D.O.K. (Patton Oswalt) has long pursued his dream of one day conquering the world. But after years of setbacks and failures fighting the Earth’s mightiest heroes, M.O.D.O.K. has run his evil organization A.I.M. into the ground. Ousted as A.I.M.’s leader, while also dealing with his crumbling marriage and family life, the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing is set to confront his greatest challenge yet! The series stars Patton Oswalt (M.O.D.O.K.), Melissa Fumero (Melissa), Aimee Garcia (Jodie), Ben Schwartz (Lou), Wendi McLendon-Covey (Monica), Beck Bennett (Austin Van Der Sleet), Jon Daly (Super-Adaptoid) and Sam Richardson (Gary).

M.O.D.O.K. is the final project from the now-defunct Marvel Television division, which was recently folded into Marvel Studios proper and under the leadership of Kevin Feige. The series was one of several original Marvel streaming series announced as being developed for Hulu back in early 2019. It also happens to be the only one of those shows that got made! Other Hulu Marvel series that died while in development include Howard The Duck, Hit-Monkey, Tigra And Dazzler, and Ghost Rider; although Hulu did recently release their original Marvel series, Helstrom, last year! Helstrom was met with minimal fanfare and the series was quickly canceled.

As a stop-motion adult-oriented animated comedy, it should come as little surprise that M.O.D.O.K. is being made by Stoopid Buddy Studios; the same team behind Adult Swim’s cult classic Robot Chicken. M.O.D.O.K. is produced by Marvel Studios with Marvel Television and Marvel Animation. Series creator and writer Jordan Blum is serving as showrunner and will share executive producer duties with Patton Oswalt, Jeph Loeb, Joe Quesada, Brett Crawley, Robert Maitia, Grant Gish, and Karim Zriek.

Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere its first ten-episode season on the Hulu subscription streaming service on May 21, 2021. Oddly enough, it is timed out kind of perfectly to serve as some entertainment in between Marvel’s other big shows, as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is set to come to a close this weekend and Loki will not premiere on Disney+ until June!
