Artoo Detoo (R2-D2) along with his counterpart See Threepio (C-3PO) return to action with their own animated adventure, A Droid Story.
Disney is producing A Droid Story featuring our favorite droids (Sorry BB-8). It will air on the streaming service Disney+. Lucasfilm Animation and ILM are also said to be involved.
“As we continue to develop new stories, the intersection of animation of visual effects, offers new opportunities for us to explore.” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy told investors during the 6-hour live stream. “This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero guided by our most iconic duo… on a secret mission known only to them. What could possibly go wrong?” she added.
This won’t be the famous droid duo’s first animated series. Star Wars Droids was one of the first projects to arrive after the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983. Set before the events of the original trilogy, it followed the droids as they moved from master to master. It featured an amazing theme song written and performed by Stewart Copland, the drummer of The Police. Just try to get it out of your head.
The new series doesn’t have a scheduled launch date yet.
THE FUTURE OF STAR WARS
A Droid Story is one of three new animated projects Disney announced during their streaming investor event. It, along with The Bad Batch, a follow up to The Clone Wars, and Star Wars: Visions, an anime anthology series coming in 2021
Also in production are the live-action series Andor, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. New shows in development include Lando, Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic, and The Acolyte.
On the theatrical front, Wonder Woman auteur Patty Jenkins will be directing the next Star Wars feature film, Rogue Squadron. It will tell the story of “a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.”
