‘Daredevil’ Rights Revert To Marvel Studios: Now What?

As of this week, the movie and TV rights for Daredevil and his supporting cast of characters have reverted back to Marvel Studios!

Marvel’s Man Without Fear was previously licensed to Netflix, who produced three seasons of a Daredevil television series starring Charlie Cox in the titular role. The show was abruptly cancelled on November 29th, 2018, shortly after its third season premiered. According to the contract in place for the Marvel/Netflix deal, Marvel Studios is unable to use any of the characters used in the Netflix produced Marvel shows in any of their movies or television series for two full years after the series cancellation date.

So what does this mean now? Well, for starters, Marvel Studios is now once again free to develop a new Daredevil project, be it a rebooted television series or even a new theatrical film. Not only are they are also free to use the character, but they can also use his supporting cast like Kingpin, Elektra, Bullseye, and so many more in other projects.  Alternatively, they could choose to revive the already established Daredevil television series on another network (like Hulu for example, which is owned by Marvel Studios parent company Disney).

Fans are definitely hoping that Marvel doesn’t turn a blind eye to the character as seen with social media blowing up in recent weeks with the #SaveDaredevil hashtag. Their hopes are to bring back the already established cast in a new incarnation of the previous Daredevil television series. People really seem to enjoy Charlie Cox in the role of Matt Murdock, and Vincent D’Onofrio’s performance as Wilson Fisk (aka The Kingpin) was nothing short of iconic. Relaunching the previous series would definitely be an easy way for Marvel Studios to earn more goodwill from the fans and bring this version of Daredevil back into the MCU fold.

In addition to Daredevil, the film and television rights to both Iron Fist and Luke Cage also reverted back to Marvel Studios, and the rights for both Jessica Jones and The Punisher are set to revert by the end of February 2021. Could we see some new street level action coming from Marvel Studios once they have all of these characters back? Only time will tell for sure.

What would you like to see Marvel do with Daredevil? A new movie? An all-new rebooted television series? A relaunch of the older television series? Let us know in the comments section below!
