With the impending release of Wonder Woman 1984 less than a month away after over a year of delays (remember, the original release date was in December 2019), things are looking up for the future state of the DC Universe and the Wonder Woman franchise. It looks like the world of everyone’s favorite Amazonian Princess isn’t slowing down any time soon. Warner Bros has already announced plans for another sequel in the film series, but even more interesting is that they are also working on a spinoff story focusing on the Amazons of Themyscira!

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins first mentioned the plans for this Amazon themed spinoff last December, but only recently brought the project up again after months of silence. When discussing the project with Geek Magazine (via Reddit) she said,

This is a story that Geoff Johns and I came up with and then introduced to Warner. The events of this story take place after Diana leaves Themyscira, the Island of the Amazons, and there are some twists and turns linked to what will happen between Wonder Woman 1984 and Wonder Woman 3. The production of the project has not yet officially started, but I hope we get it because I love this story.

So what does this mean for the story? Well, for one thing, we know that this project is set to release during the window of time between Wonder Woman 1984 and the yet to be titled Wonder Woman 3, likely tying into events from both films. We also know that this story is taking place after Diana has left Themyscira (although we don’t know how long after), so it has got to be set sometime between the events of the first Wonder Woman film in 1918 and 2016 when the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice occurred.

While it has never been said outright, it has been implied heavily that Diana has never returned to Themyscira between these events. We expect that we will revisit Themyscira on-screen in Wonder Woman 1984, and it is highly likely that the island of Amazons will only be seen in flashbacks.

Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is not expected to star in this new Amazons project, so we do not yet have an idea of who the series will actually focus on. Many expect the series to focus on a character we haven’t seen yet appear in the DCEU, which leaves a lot of options open. It is probably also safe to assume that we can expect to see Connie Nielsen reprising her role as Hippolyta as she is the Queen of Themyscira and would likely have some kind of presence in the story. However this story unfolds, it will be setting the path for us to see Diana making her way back home when she returns to the screen in the eventual Wonder Woman 3.

Director Patty Jenkins, who directed both Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984, is not planning on getting behind the camera to helm this spinoff. Jenkins will still be heavily involved with the project’s creative direction as a producer on the film. As recently as April, Jenkins had mentioned that the plan was for this new spinoff project to release ahead of Wonder Woman 3, so we should hopefully find out more information on this project soon.

Fans can look forward to Wonder Woman 1984 later this month when it will finally hits screens both big and small with its simultaneous release in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service on December 25, 2020.
