Academy Awards 2024: ‘Oppenheimer’ Blows Up The Competition With 13 Nominations (Complete List)

Perhaps not that surprisingly, Oppenheimer dominated the Academy Award nominations with 13 nods including Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role for Cillian Murphy, Actor in a Supporting Role for Robert Downey Jr., and Directing for Christopher Nolan.

Warner Bros.

Following OppenheimerPoor Things garnered 11 nominations, with Killers of the Flower Moon earning 10, and 2023’s box office champion Barbie scoring 8, however, neither director Greta Gerwig nor star Margot Robbie landed nods in their respective categories. Barbie did get into the Best Picture category so Robbie does get a nomination as a producer for that. But without Gerwig being nominated for Best Director, it’s highly unlikely that Barbie could take the top prize.

For Best Picture, Oppenheimer and Barbie are up against American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.

Oppenheimer‘s Cillian Murphy will be competing for Lead Actor against The Holdovers‘s Paul Giamatti and the prize will likely come down to these two. Also nominated are Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction. One surprising omission is Leonardo DiCaprio for Killers of the Flower Moon, which was viewed as a lock.

Among Oppenheimer‘s other honors is Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., who is up against Sterling K. Brown for American Fiction, Robert De Niro for Killers of the Flower Moon, Ryan Gosling for Barbie, and Mark Ruffalo for Poor Things. Speaking of Poor Things, Willem Dafoe did not get a nod, which some view as a snub.

There really is no Lead Actress in Oppenheimer, but Emily Blunt did score a Supporting Actress nomination, placing her against Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple, America Ferrera for Barbie, Jodie Foster for Nyad, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers. Randolph has been sweeping the other awards this season, so she is eyed as the frontrunner.

The race for Lead Actress is between Annette Benning for Nyad, Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Emma Stone for Poor Things. This time, it looks like this will come down to either Gladstone or Stone.  After winning the Golden Globe, Gladstone was expected to be the frontrunner, but then she got snubbed by the BAFTAs.  That may give Stone an edge, but we’ll see.

Best Director is between Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall, Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon, Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things, and Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest.

Barbie got two nominations in the Best Song category. “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling and “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish are both recognized, with Eilish’s song most likely to win. However, “I’m Just Ken” just scored the Critics Choice Award, so that improves its chances, although it may be seen as more of a novelty song. These two are competing against “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot, “It Never Went Away” from American Symphony, and “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from Killers of the Flower Moon.

Just an observation, not a single song nominated was from an actual musical movie. WonkaThe Color Purple, and Wish were completely ignored.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning received two nominations for Sound and Visual Effects, marking the first time this long-running franchise has ever been nominated at the Oscars.

You can view all the nominations below.  The Academy Awards will be broadcast on March 10.
