Golden Globes 2024: ‘Oppenheimer’ And ‘Succession’ Kicked Off Awards Season With Big Wins

Due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, the Emmy Awards have been bumped from late 2023 to early 2024, closer to the Oscars. As a result, the Golden Globes are basically the kick-off to awards season at this point, which is somewhat fitting as it encompasses both films and television.

If the Golden Globes are a preview of how awards season will play out, Oppenheimer and Succession are off to a great start. Oppenheimer nabbed five prizes and Succession took four to top their respective mediums.

Not only did Oppenheimer win Best Motion Picture – Drama, but Cillian Murphy won Best Actor in a Drama, Christopher Nolan accepted Best Director, Ludwig Göransson won Best Score, and Robert Downey Jr. received Best Supporting Actor.

Paramount/Apple

Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American ever to win Best Female Actor in a Drama. She delivered part of her speech in Blackfoot, the language of her heritage.

In the Comedy/Musical film categories, Poor Things and The Holdovers took home quite a few statues. Poor Things won Best Motion Picture, while Emma Stone claimed Best Female Actor. From The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti won Best Male Actor, and Da’vine Joy Randolph took Best Supporting Female Actor.

Despite being the most nominated movie, this year’s box office champion, Barbie may have to just be satisfied with the $1 billion+ it made as its ultimate accolade, but it didn’t go home empty-handed at the Golden Globes. Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” won Best Song and will probably claim the same prize at the Oscars. It may even take home a few Grammys when those roll around. Barbie also won the total b.s. award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. This is a nebulous prize that no one even understands. What is it for?!

HBO

As for TV, the big winners were Succession in the Drama arena, The Bear in the Comedy/Musical categories (although I honestly don’t see this as a comedy, and it certainly isn’t a musical), and Netflix’s Beef in the miniseries listings.

Succession took Best TV Series with Kieran Culkin taking Best Male Actor, Sarah Snook winning Best Female Actor, and Matthew Macfadyen earning Best Supporting Male Actor.

Elizabeth Debicki won Best Supporting Female Actor in a Drama for The Crown, which otherwise didn’t win any other awards, even though it was up for several.

Hulu

The Best Musical/Comedy TV Series prize went to Hulu’s The Bear, with Jeremy Allen White taking Best Male Actor. (If you haven’t seen his recent Calvin Klein ad campaign… go Google it. You’re welcome.)

Ayo Edebiri nabbed the Best Female Actor award in the comedy category.

As mentioned, in the Miniseries, Anthology, or Made-For-TV Movie categories, Beef scored, winning the top prize with awards also going to leads Steven Yeun and Ali Wong.
