Margot Robbie Doesn’t Think There Will Be A ‘Barbie’ Sequel

Barbie was the highest-grossing movie of 2023 earning over $1.4 billion. The traditional way that studios approach such successes is to get right to work on a sequel, especially for a film based on a world-known IP. But, could it be that Barbie will be one-and-done?

It sounds like it, according to the lead doll herself, Margot Robbie.  Speaking to the Associated Press, Robbie admitted:

“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something.  Greta [Gerwig] put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

Further analyzing Barbie’s success, Robbie stated:

“It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake.  It can be totally original. It can still be big given the big budget to do that. And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants which is, you know, I think a misconception that a lot of people still have.”

The way Barbie ended, it didn’t really leave the door open for a sequel. Unless Greta Gerwig and Robbie, who served as a producer, have a great idea for another movie, it would probably be best to simply leave this great movie alone and let it stand. Hopefully, Warner Bros. won’t force a follow-up and bring in a new creative team.

While most knew that Barbie would be a hit, pretty much no one saw it as becoming the #1 movie of the year. Likewise, very few foresaw it being as critically acclaimed as it was. It is currently eyed as a shoo-in for multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

The soundtrack recently racked up 12 Grammy Award nominations, led by Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” which earned five nods. Other songs that received recognition were “Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa, “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj and Icespice, and “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling.

Are you sad that Barbie won’t be getting a sequel?
