Destin Daniel Cretton Departs ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ But Not Marvel As A Whole

The shuffling behind the scenes of Marvel continues. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has departed Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but he isn’t walking away from the studio completely.  At this point, he is set to fire back up the Disney+ series Wonder Man starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, which shut down due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.  Cretton serves as executive producer on that program and will direct at least two episodes.

After that, he will turn his attention to crafting a sequel to his 2021 hit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.  That film grossed over $432M worldwide and ended with the title character being set up for a larger role in the MCU going forward.

Reportedly the writers for both Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars were replaced.  Jeff Loveness tackled the first draft of the script for Kang Dynasty after he wrote Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania… a movie that underperformed and was not well-liked.

However, it has been evident over the past few months that Marvel is seriously overhauling its output, scaling back on both the neverending Disney+ series and even theatrical films. It seems Kevin Feige is taking back a lot of control and wants to emphasize quality over quantity.  Next year, there will only be one MCU theatrical film — Deadpool 3.

Then there is the Jonathan Majors issue.  The actor portrayed Kang (or some variation of him) in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which were meant to set him up as “the next Thanos.”  But in his personal life, the actor is awaiting trial for domestic abuse charges.  Disney and Marvel have remained mum on the matter. There is speculation, however, that the studio will veer away from Kang and that Kang Dynasty will actually be scrapped in favor of a different movie.

The ending of Loki Season 2 seemed to provide Marvel with an out if they want to abandon Majors and the character.

Do you still want to see Kang return in the MCU or would you be okay if they did something else with the next Avengers installment?
