Get Your First Look At ‘The Marvels’ In The Teaser Trailer

After her solo movie debut, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel made a cameo appearance in Avengers: Endgame, but at last, she gets a chance to shine again on her own.  Well, not quite.

In The Marvels, Carol is joined by Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, the daughter of Carol’s best friend Maria, who made her grown-up debut in WandaVision, and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, who starred in her own Disney+ series.  Samuel L. Jackson also appears as Nick Fury.

At the end of Ms. Marvel, Kamala mysteriously vanished, only to be replaced by Carol.  Now, we finally know how, with a tease as to why, with the release of the first teaser trailer for The Marvels.  Check it out below:

The tone of this picture seems more along the lines of the fun and heartwarming Ms. Marvel than the by-the-numbers first Captain Marvel, which should make for a delightful film.  (Too bad not that many people saw Ms. Marvel.  If you didn’t, you should!)

The trailer features the returns of fan favorites from both, including Kamala’s family and Goose the Flerken from Captain Marvel.  In fact, it looks like there are a bunch of Flekens in this movie.

In the trailer, it is revealed that when the Marvels use their powers, they switch places with one another, regardless of how far apart, even worlds away.  This is a deep-cut reference to the comics in which the first Marvel Comics Captain Marvel, Mar-Vel, used to switch places with his teen “sidekick” Rick Jones, which itself was a nod to the very first Captain Marvel, known today as Shazam, who was a teen who transformed into the adult superhero.

In the comics, Monica Rambeau has operated under the names Captain Marvel, Photon, and Spectrum.  In Captain Marvel, her mother Maria used Photon as her flight call sign.  It’s possible that in The Marvels, Monica will go by Photon as a tribute to her mother. It wouldn’t be surprising if she chose to go by Spectrum either.

The Marvels arrives after Secret Invasion, which focuses on Nick Fury. Definitely check out that show as there will most likely be some elements that lead into the film.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

“Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe.”

The Marvels was directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), with a screenplay by Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells.  The film opens on November 10, 2023.
