Ezra Miller Pleads Not Guilty To May Burglary Charges; Faces 26 Years In Prison If Found Guilty

Ezra Miller pled not guilty to breaking and entering and robbery charges stemming from an incident in May in Vermont.  Miller was allowed to appear remotely in Green Mountain State’s Superior Court on Monday morning, before Superior Court Judge Kerry A. McDonald-Cady.

In May, the troubled actor was caught on film breaking into the home of neighbor Isaac Winokur and stealing three bottles of liquor — gin, vodka, and rum.  As a condition for Miller’s release, they were forbidden from interacting with Winokur and another Vermont resident, Aiden Early, “by phone, in person, email, text, posting on social media” and “can’t abuse or harass them as well,” per McDonald-Cady.  Miller’s lawyer, Lisa B. Shelkrot, stated “We agree to those conditions.”  Miller added, “I do understand.”

In August, the Vermont State Police divulged:

“As a result of an investigation that included surveillance videos and statements, probable cause was found to charge Ezra M. Miller with the offense of felony burglary into an unoccupied dwelling.”

Miller was supposedly looking through Winokur’s house in search of ingredients needed to make a recipe for their mother when they decided to steal the liquor.  It has never been clear whether Miller actually knew Winokur or just randomly broke into this home.

This followed a string of troubling incidents including allegedly grooming underage girls, acting as a quasi-cult leader with drugs and guns scattered around their Vermont commune, and several counts of physical and verbal assault.

In August, Miller offered a public apology and entered mental health treatment.  As they stated at the time:

“I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior.  I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe, and productive stage in my life.”

At the end of that month, Ezra Miller reportedly met with executives at Warner Bros. to apologize again and to work out plans for their upcoming high-stakes superhero flick, The Flash.  Despite Miller’s turmoil, Warner Bros. has been steadfast in its plans to release this picture.  (It appears that Miller’s tenure at WB’s other major franchise, Fantastic Beasts, is over.)

Many have wondered whether WB would actually have Miller go on the press junket to promote The Flash (probably not).  Should Miller be found guilty, that question will be moot as they face 26 years in prison and over $2,000 in fines.

Stay tuned to this drama as it unfolds.

The Flash is currently scheduled to open in theaters on June 23, 2023, following several delays.
