Sasha Calle’s ‘Supergirl’ Movie Will “Likely Not Move Forward”

Sasha Calle will debut as Supergirl in The Flash, whenever it finally gets released. But there were already plans in place for her to star in her own movie. With the massive restructuring of Warner Bros.’s DC properties that have taken place since the company was bought out by Discovery, a lot of DC projects are getting canceled. Most recently was the Batgirl HBO Max movie. Fans are now just waiting to see what else might not see the light of day. It sounds as though Supergirl, which is in early development, is likely to also get slashed.

As part of a lengthy Rolling Stones article, an insider revealed:

“Now, the prospect of other DC films being squashed looms. Insiders say Supergirl, which is in development, is not likely to move forward.”

Discovery is really laying into Warner Bros. for its reckless spending and management over the past few years. The biggest issue was the decision to release all of the studio’s big movies day-and-date on HBO Max and in theaters in 2021, which cost the studio hundreds of millions (possibly over a billion) in potential revenue. The studio dumped $73 million into the Snyder Cut, which gained them probably zero dollars.

As far as DC, WB didn’t seem to know what it was doing. Initially, Zack Snyder was overseeing this brand, but after fans and critics snubbed Batman V Superman, that was derailed. While WB scored several hits, including Aquaman which grossed over $1B, the movies tended to get a mixed or even negative reaction.

Then WB began releasing DC movies that weren’t part of the overall Universe. Joker and The Batman were among them and they were both hits, with Joker earning over $1B and winning Joaquin Phoenix an Academy Award.

But obviously, there was a lack of clear vision. The studio was throwing whatever at the wall to see what stuck. Discovery and new WB head David Zaslav have announced a 10-year plan to realign the DC Universe into something more coherent and appealing.

Are you disappointed that Sasha Calle’s Supergirl will most likely not get made?  Where do you want to see the DC Universe go?
