Supergirl is coming to the DC cinematic universe in The Flash movie, and she will be portrayed by Sasha Calle. Calle has been nominated for an Emmy for her role as Lola Rosales Abbott on The Young and the Restless. Reportedly, she beat out over 425 other young actors for the role and was selected by director Andy Muschietti, Warner Brothers’ head of DC films, Walter Hamada, and the film’s producers, who reportedly viewed all of the auditions. According to a report from Deadline, they were impressed by her “toughness and vulnerability.”

Muschietti broke the news by posting the Zoom video of him informing Calle that she had landed the role.

Additionally, Muschietti stated:

“I saw more than four hundred auditions. The US, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.”

It sounds as though Muschietti and his collaborators were specifically searching for a Latina performer. Calle is American and was born in Boston, but she is of Columbian descent. It’s not clear if this version will be Superman’s cousin, as they are of different ethnicities.

Supergirl is traditionally depicted as Caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes in the comics and in animation. Melissa Benoist currently portrays Supergirl on The CW series of the same name.

Calle previously appeared in the Amazon miniseries Socially Awkward. As you can see from the video that Muschietti shared, Calle was not aware of the role that she was auditioning for.

Supergirl was first teased (very subtly) in Man of Steel when an open stasis pod was seen in the background on Zod’s ship.

It’s not clear what role Supergirl will play in the storyline of The Flash, as Supergirl didn’t have a part in the Flashpoint storyline on which the movie is reportedly based.

In addition to Ezra Miller, The Flash will feature appearances from Ben Affleck’s Batman and Michael Keaton’s O.G. Batman. It is known that production recently began. The picture is scheduled to open on November 4th, 2022.
