Sony Reveals A New ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie Is In The Works

Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Sony

At the end of its CinemaCon presentation, Sony showed a sizzle reel that revealed plans for a fifth Ghostbusters movie. However, no details were given. It is unclear if this is a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the most recent film released last fall after numerous COVID-related delays.

Afterlife was a sequel to the original two movies from the 1980s. Possibly, due to the delays, the film was just a moderate success at the box office.

At this point, the younger cast members have aged a few years, so some of the same charms might not be there in another direct sequel. It wouldn’t be completely shocking if Sony decided to do yet another reboot. Stay tuned for updates.

Sony’s Presentation At CinemaCon

Sony’s presentation also highlighted David Leitch’s action-packed Bullet Train. The film reportedly has a very Guy Ritchie feel to it. It boasts an all-star cast including Sandra Bullock (who is making quite a comeback these days), Brad Pitt, Zazie Beetz, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Logan Lerman, Michael Shannon, Brian Tyree Henry, Hiroyuki Sanada, Karen Fukuhara, Andrew Koji, and Bad Bunny.

That was followed by a presentation of the crime thriller Where the Crawdads Sing, based on the bestselling novel by Delia Owens. Reese Witherspoon, who produced the picture, remotely introduced the presentation from the set of another project she is currently filming.

Viola Davis was bestowed with Cinema Con’s Trailblazer of the Year Award. The organizers then announced this award would furthermore be known as The Viola Davis Trailblazer of the Year Award. Davis was on hand to promote her upcoming historical action flick The Woman King in which she stars and produces. Gina Prince-Blythewood directed. Jayme Lawson, Lashana Lynche, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega are among the other cast members.

The platinum-selling artist, Bad Bunny (who makes his major film acting debut in Bullet Train), was announced as playing El Muerto the first lead Marvel Latino character.

This segued into possibly the biggest Spider-related news: the appearance by Phil Lord and Chris Miller who introduced the first fifteen minutes of Spider-Man: Across the Universe. They also announced that the third in this series will now be titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

The new Ghostbusters sizzle reel also included glimpses of Madame WebKraven the Hunter, Devotion, The 65, and Heart of a Lion. Venom 3 was also confirmed.

Sony’s presentation was the first of many for this year’s Cinema Con. Expect more news from other studios this week.
