Jensen Ackles is staying in the realm of superheroes. He has a role on the upcoming third season of The Boys as Soldier Boy, the reality’s pastiche of Captain America. And it seems that Ackles will be playing another supe — one that is likely more altruistic– in the future as it has been revealed that he is working on a project with Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti.
For a panel held at SXSW, his bio included the statement:
“Jensen is also developing an Untitled DC Project with Greg Berlanti.”
Another Piece of the Super Pie
Is it a movie? A TV show? Will it be on The CW or HBO Max?
Any of these are possible. Berlanti’s relationship with DC goes back to 2011 when he served as a producer of the Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds. And yet, he was still invited back to work on additional DC projects. He also produced the tie-in animated movie, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, and went on to create and/or produce The CW’s Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Black Lightning, Stargirl, and Superman & Lois, as well as the streaming shows Titans and Doom Patrol and the animated projects Vixen, Freedom Fighters: The Ray, Constantine: City of Demons, and Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons. Â
While the Arrowverse shows and Stargirl air on The CW, Titans and Doom Patrol stream on HBO Max. Berlanti is also attached to two upcoming HBO Max series, Strange Adventures and a Green Lantern-based program.
Also possibly in the pipeline is a Booster Gold movie which Berlanti was not only attached to produce but direct. It’s been years since any news has surfaced regarding that. Should it materialize, it seems that HBO Max would be a better home for it than theaters. This seems to be where parent company Warner Bros. is releasing more experimental DC fare like the recent hit Peacemaker and the upcoming Batgirl movie.
Then again, Ackles is already a familiar face for The CW viewers, having starred on Supernatural for 15 seasons.
Who Could Jensen Ackles Be Playing?
With his chiseled good looks, Ackles has been an actor that many have wanted to see in the superhero genre. He previously voiced Jason Todd/Red Hood in the animated movie Batman: Under the Red Hood and Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman: The Long Halloween. He also had a role as Jason Teague on Smallville.
It would be easy to imagine Ackles as Green Lantern Hal Jordan or Booster Gold. (Finn Wittrock has already been cast in the Green Lantern TV series as Guy Gardner, while Jeremy Irvine has been cast as Alan Scott.) Then again, it’s also possible that this could be an animated project.
