Every year, millions of people turn into the Super Bowl, and it’s not just for the game. Studios pay millions to have their latest trailers screen before the biggest audience of the year. Disney and Marvel are no exception and have summoned up Benedict Cumberbatch in a new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ad, which is sure to get folks talking.

A Multiverse of Marvel Surprises

The sequel looks to take the franchise into new territory. It keeps the groundbreaking visual style of the first Doctor Strange movie while exploring darker corners of the growing Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It also appears to be the first Marvel feature film release to pick up story elements from the studio’s line of Disney+ streaming series with Elizabeth Olsen returning as Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, (after the events of WandaVision), as well as continuing the story from Spider-Man: No Way Home. The trailer looks amazing and has a few surprises!

The Multi-delay of Madness

Originally planned for May of 2021, but then delayed due to Covid, the film picks up Steven Strange’s story from last year’s Spider-Man film, and delivers on the promise of the Marvel Disney+ series, WandaVision, Loki, and What If? The extra year allowed for additional filming that reportedly adds some variants of existing characters and maybe a few new characters. That voice is unmistakable. Dare I say it’s “engaging.” But we won’t know the truth of it all until the film reaches theaters.

Dr. Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness has a pedigree rich in both horror and superhero history. It was directed by horror legend Sam Raimi, who helmed the original Spider-Man films with Toby McGuire in the 2000s. The script is by Michael Waldron, who wrote Loki.

Along with Cumberbatch and Olson, Dr. Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness stars Rachel McAdams returning as Dr. Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong as Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, and Marvel newcomer Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters on May 6, 2022.
