Back in March, it was reported that Disney+ was planning a spin-off from the forthcoming series Hawkeye featuring the character Echo, a.k.a. Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox.  During Disney+ Day, it was confirmed that Echo is indeed kicking her way into her own program on the streaming service.

Echo is a deaf Native American combatant who has the power to mimic the fighting style of anyone else she observes, kinda like the Taskmaster.  It is also worth noting that Echo was the first person to operate under the guise of Ronin, the identity that Clint Barton later adopted in the comics and was shown operating as in Avengers: Endgame.  There have been glimpses of Ronin in Hawkeye but is that a flashback to Clint’s days in the role, or will Maya become Ronin in this series?

Perhaps to help set up the Echo series, Zahn McClarnon will appear on Hawkeye as Echo’s father, William Lopez.

Etan Cohen (Holmes & WatsonIdiocracy) and Emily Cohen are attached to write and executive produce.

The character of Echo made her debut in the pages of Daredevil in 1999, so there are some that hope that her getting her own series may open the door for Matt Murdock and/or the Kingpin to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  In the comics, William Lopez worked for the Kingpin.

But first, Alaqua Cox will appear on Hawkeye which debuts on Disney+ on Wednesday, November 24, the day before Thanksgiving (in the U.S., anyway).  Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld star as the original and new Haweyes, respectively.  The cast also includes Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop, Kate’s mother, Fra Free co-stars as “Kazi,” a.k.a. Kazimierz Kazimierczak, a character in the comics known as The Clown, and Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne, a character who, in the comics, was Hawkeye’s mentor, known as the Swordsman, who appears to be romantically involved with Eleanor.

Florence Pugh is expected to appear as the new Black Widow.  Linda Cardellini has been seen in a trailer as Clint’s wife Laura, as have Ava Russo, Ben Sakamoto, and Cade Woodward, who play their kids Lila, Cooper, and Nathaniel, respectively.

Disney+ announced a slew of new TV series that will be arriving in the next two years, so as of right now, it isn’t known where Echo will fall in the schedule.  It seems unlikely that it will arrive until some time in 2023.
