Ever since it was announced, we’ve been salivating for news about the upcoming Moon Knight series on Disney+. That only intensified after the confirmation that Oscar Isaac would play the titular character, and we got some behind-the-scenes footage of Isaac training for the role. Then we learned that veteran film star Ethan Hawke would play the series antagonist. And as if hearing our pleas, Marvel and Disney provided fans on Disney+ Day with a sneak peek of the upcoming series inside a 14-minute montage of their popular and upcoming shows.

Slated to premiere in 2022, Moon Knight tells the story of Marc Spector, a former mercenary who was left for dead in the desert but is saved by the Moon god, Khonshu. Khonshu imbues Spector with mystical abilities, which he uses as a masked vigilante named Moon Knight. On top of these special powers, Spector also suffers from dissociative identity disorder and lives multiple lives under different identities.

The sneak peek we got during Disney+ Day features many aspects of the Marc Spector character, including his dubious sanity. A voiceover to the clip has Isaac stating, “I can’t tell the difference between my waking life and dreams,” implying that Spector moves through his life in a fugue state. Following that is another voice, much deeper and gruffer than the first, stating, “The voice in your head… It devours you,” which is likely a reference to Khonshu inside Spector motivating him to fight crime as he does.

Most of this is conjecture, of course, as this is the only glimpse we’ve been given into the series. It will certainly be interesting to see how the show plays out and which direction the character goes. Marvel can also use Moon Knight as a stepping stone into the more supernatural areas of the Marvel Universe; after all, Moon Knight’s first appearance in the comics was in the series Werewolf By Night.

In addition to Isaac and Hawke, Moon Knight will star May Calamawy. The series, written by The Umbrella Academy’s Jeremy Slater, will be directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, with Mohamed Diab acting as showrunner. As of now, there is no hard premiere date set for Moon Knight, but it is expected to arrive on Disney+ in 2022.
