The Mandalorian Season 2 leads the nominations at the 2021 Emmy awards, alongside Netflix’s The Crown. Both shows earned 24 nominations. WandaVision, Ted Lasso, and The Handmaid’s Tale also performed very well. Ironically, just one week after HBO canceled Lovecraft Country, that series garnered 18 nominations.
The Mandalorian is up for the top honor, Outstanding Drama Series, facing off against The Boys, Bridgerton, The Crown, Lovecraft Country, Pose, The Handmaid’s Tale, and This Is Us. Giancarlo Esposito is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, against Lovecraft Country‘s Michael K. Williams, The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, and O-T Fagbenle, Perry Mason’s John Lithgow, The Crown’s Tobias Menzies, and This Is Us’ Chris Sullivan.
Timothy Olyphant and Carl Weathers were both nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for The Mandalorian (Esposito was actually nominated in this category last year before his part was beefed up for Season 2.) Other nominees include Courtney B. Vance for Lovecraft Country and Don Cheadle for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The Mandalorian also received nods for Writing for a Drama Series for Dave Filoni, Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) for Ludwig Göransson, Stunt Performance for Lateef Crowder, Casting for a Drama Series for Sarah Finn, and Directing for a Drama Series for Jon Favreau. However, these awards are considered technical and won’t be given out on the telecast.
Last year, The Mandalorian took home seven awards in the technical categories for Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour), Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) for Göransson, Production Design for a Narrative Program (Half-Hour), Stunt Coordination, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Special Visual Effects.
The Handmaid’s Tale scored multiple nominations in the acting categories, including Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for Elisabeth Moss. Also nominated in that category is Jurnee Smollett for Lovecraft Country. Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, and Madeline Brewer all received nods for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, along with Lovecraft Country’s Aunjanue Ellis. Alexis Bledel and Mckenna Grace Are nominated for Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
Meanwhile, WandaVision is up for Outstanding Limited Series. Also nominated in that category are Mare of Easttown, I May Destroy You, The Queen’s Gambit, and The Underground Railroad. Both Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen are nominated for Actor and Actress, respectively, in a Limited Series or Movie. Katherine Hahn is nominated for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
With the pandemic, television was more important than ever last year, but was it also better than ever before? Maybe!
Cedric the Entertainer will host this year’s Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast live on Sunday, September 19 at 8 pm ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS. It will also be live-streamed and on-demand on Paramount+.
