Jinkies! Scooby Doo fans will be excited to hear that Warner Bros is in early development with a sequel to last year’s sleeper animated hit Scoob!!
Scoob! (2020) is a CG animated feature length film that was meant to reboot and revitalize the Scooby Doo brand for a new generation and to springboard a number of other classic Hanna-Barbera characters to the forefront of modern day popular culture. The film was generally well received by audiences and featured an all star cast including Will Forte, Zac Efron, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Isaacs, Gina Rodriguez, Amanda Seyfried, Ken Jeong, and Tracy Morgan.
The film was released last summer amidst the early days of the ongoing global pandemic. Warner Bros would release Scoob! in the few theaters that had remained open while simultaneously releasing it across digital streaming platforms; a release method that would prove popular over the past year as theaters weren’t deemed safe by many guests.
The film took in a disappointing $26.3 million at the box office, but as the majority of theaters were closed during this time it is hard to hold that against the film or use it as a judgement of its quality. It seems as though the studio was pleased with Scoob!‘s performance regardless, likely due to sales numbers on digital and physical media platforms, as a sequel is being developed.
During an interview with CBM, the man behind the film, director Tony Cervone, recently revealed that a sequel is in the works. When asked if he would consider doing a sequel or prequel to Scoob!, Cervone wasn’t shy about future plans, saying:
Actually, we are kicking the tyres on a follow-up to Scoob! It hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s something we’re all excited about. The whole creative team that made the first movie is still around and back and working on something new. It was neat to create this Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe, and it’s exciting to return to it.
While the sequel has not yet been officially announced by Warner Bros, the fact that the team behind the first film is already working away on piecing together a follow up is a great sign for the brand’s future. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we see Scooby, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, and Fred all piled back into the Mystery Machine to solve more mysteries! And who knows? After classic Hanna-Barbera characters like Blue Falcon, Dynomutt, Dick Dastardly, and Captain Caveman stole the show in Scoob!, a sequel could leave the door wide open for any number of old favorites to return in a big way!
