James Gunn Shoots Down Adam Warlock Casting Rumors

No matter how much people keep talking about it, there looks to be no truth to the recent rumors that Marvel Studios has begun the casting process for the role of Adam Warlock for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. James Gunn, the writer and director of the Guardians Of The Galaxy films, recently set the record straight via his Twitter account.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 was initially supposed to have been released already, but there have been several factors that have led to the film’s constant delays. These include the firing and subsequent rehiring of director James Gunn by Disney, Gunn’s commitment to his projects at Warner Bros that he was hired to do after Disney fired him and before they rehired him(like The Suicide Squad and its television spinoff series Peacemaker), and of course, the ongoing global pandemic that has pushed many major Marvel projects back.

After all of these delays, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is finally set to start filming sometime later this year, which means that rumors regarding the film’s production and casting have begun to stir up online.

The biggest rumor running rampant lately has been that Marvel is supposedly working on casting Adam Warlock. The character was very explicitly teased in one of the stinger scenes during the end credits of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and has been frequently discussed by fans ever since. Many expected him to make an appearance already as the character was key to the comic book version of the Infinity Saga storyline which was adapted in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But the story was reworked to not need him.

Regardless of how badly people want to see Adam Warlock join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise writer and director James Gunn jumped on Twitter to shoot down these rumors not long after they first popped up. The report he responded to suggested that Marvel Studios was looking for a ‘Zac Efron-type’ for the character who was set to debut in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. You can see Gunn’s response below.

Plot details for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 are virtually non-existent as of now. Gunn’s original script and story for the film was completed before his abrupt firing back in 2018 but has supposedly faced some minor changes to accommodate other projects that are now taking place before Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 instead of the other way around. Very few plot points have been confirmed for the film, although supposedly Rocket’s origins will be addressed and are a key part of the film’s narrative story. The film is also expected to answer the question of where the surviving 2014 Gamora disappeared to following Thanos’s defeat in Avengers: Endgame.

Although Gunn has confirmed that these Adam Warlock casting rumors have no truth to them, it does not mean the character isn’t being planned for the film. It is entirely possible that Marvel isn’t casting the role yet, but may still do so in the future. While it is best not to hold on to hope too tightly, it is still entirely possible that Adam Warlock could still appear in the final film.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to start filming in late 2021 with an anticipated release window of some time in 2023. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait that long to see some of our favorite Guardians characters as several members of the cast are expected to appear in Taika Waititi‘s Thor: Love And Thunder, which releases on February 11, 2022.
