It has been a slow burn, but the DC Cinematic Universe is starting to get crowded! This week it is growing ever so slightly larger with the announcement that Elementary star Lucy Liu has signed on to join Warner Bros. upcoming Shazam! (2019) sequel.

In the highly-anticipated sequel, which is fully titled Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, Liu is set to play the villainous role of Kalypso. She will be joining the legendary Helen Mirren who will be playing the film’s lead villain (who also happens to be Kalypso’s sister), Hespera.

Lucy Liu recently starred in multiple seasons of the dark comedy series Why Women Kill for CBS All Access (now Paramount Plus). She is well known for her lengthy run on the modern Sherlock Holmes adaptation Elementary where she played Dr. Watson, as well as appearances in major blockbuster films like Charlie’s Angels (2000) and Kill Bill Vol.1 (2004).

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will see Zachary Levi starring; reprising the title role he first portrayed in the 2019 superhero film. Shazam! (2019) director David F. Sandberg is stepping back behind the camera for this second adventure with the classic DC Comics hero as well. The film will be based on a screenplay by writer Henry Gayden.

Story details are scarce at this time as the film isn’t set to release until 2023. So far all we know is that the story will continue the tale of the formerly normal teenager Billy Batson, who can now turn into a fully grown adult with magical superpowers when he exclaims the magic word “SHAZAM!”.

The first Shazam! film was essentially just Big (1988) with a comic book twist, so if the sequel can handle more of that without retreading too much ground, audiences should be in for another fun ride with this upcoming sequel. The first film was a nuanced balance of darker tones and light humor, and it worked phenomenally. Hopefully, this sequel will do more of the same and expand upon the character’s mythology.
