First Contact Day continued to give gifts for Star Trek fans. Paramount+ announced Star Trek: Lower Decks will get a third season. A new trailer for the upcoming second season dropped on Monday as well.
The animated comedy series, from Rick and Morty creator Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty), debuted last summer on CBS All Access. The streaming platform rebranded as Paramount+ last month. Season 2 arrives on the streamer this summer. The teaser trailer shown as part of the First Contact Day panel is full of “sci-fi stuff”, comedy, and Captain William Riker!
If you haven’t check out Star Trek: Lower Decks, you should. The series centers on a group of junior officers on board the U.S.S. Cerritos, in 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi figure out how to balance their duties and lives and their place on board a Federation starship.
The series stars Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and, Eugene Cordero. The Cerritos senior officers are played by Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, and Gillian Vigman.
As part of First Contact Day, Paramount held panels and gave news, trailers, and other surprises about what they have in store for the coming year. They showed trailers for Star Trek: Picard Season Two, Star Trek: Discovery Season Four, and gave us our first look at Captain Janeway in the new animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy. If you weren’t aware, First Contact Day, April 5 marks an important moment in the Star Trek fandom. It is the day mankind made the first contact with their first alien race, the Vulcans, in the year 2063. (As seen in the movie Star Trek: First Contact.) May the Fourth has become a chance for fans to celebrate Star Wars. Now, April 5th is becoming a day for Trekkers and Trekkies alike to honor all things Star Trek.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 begins August 12 on Paramount+.
