A Cheaper, Ad-Supported HBO Max Is Coming… Minus All Those Warner Bros Blockbusters

If you have been holding off on subscribing to HBO Max because of the $15 per month price tag, you may be in luck. A lower-priced, ad-supported version is coming in June, although the new rate was not announced. This will allow many more to enjoy all of the buzzy original movies and TV shows like The Flight Attendant, HBO’s Euphoria, the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and other DC content like Titans and Doom Patrol which shifted over from the now-defunct DC Universe. And of course, HBO Max is the ONLY place where you can stream Friends!

Now it’s a matter of personal taste as to whether you want to see ads on your streaming service, even at a lower cost. Some folks hate commercials and gladly pay extra to avoid them. But others don’t mind so much and if you subscribe to several services, you may need to go with the cheaper options.

However, there is a big trade-off when it comes to the cheaper version of HBO Max. Not only will you have to sit through ads, but you won’t get to watch any of the major Warner Bros. movies that are due to drop day-and-date on the streaming service and in theaters.

The only three titles mentioned in the original reporting (courtesy of CNet) were The Suicide Squad, Dune, and The Matrix 4, but other Warner Brothers titles that are due to drop on the regular version of HBO include In the Heights, Space Jam: A New Legacy, awards-bait King Richard (starring Will Smith), sci-fi romance Reminiscence (from Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy), and James Wan’s Malignant.

Already released are the Golden Globe-winning Judas and the Black Messiah and Tom & Jerry. And between now and June, we’ll also see the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.

Is there a possibility that the movies that are already released before the launch of this new cheaper HBO Max at least be available? At this time, it doesn’t sound like it. It also isn’t known when these titles will be available on the lower-priced tier.

It’s not clear if Wonder Woman 1984 will be streamable. That movie came out last year before Warner Brothers announced this plan to release its big movies on HBO Max, so it may be exempt.

WB is only dropping these big titles on HBO Max in the U.S.

Will you sign up for this lower-priced HBO Max?  Or is there any point if you don’t get the big movies?
