Captain Marvel hit theaters back in 2019 and introduced one of the MCU’s heaviest hitters in the form of Carol Danvers. Given the success of the film, and Marvel Studios’ penchant for capitalizing on their successes, it’s no mystery that Carol will show up in a part two of her own film series. In fact, Marvel Studios confirmed the film’s production at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. Brie Larson is set to reprise her role as Carol Danvers with a script from WandaVision wrier Megan McDonnell and directed by CandyMan director Nia DaCosta.
As the film is still in the early stages of pre-production, it’s no surprise that the filmmakers are still looking to fill certain roles. One such role has been filled by Zawe Ashton, according to Variety. The article states that Ashton will be a villain to Larson’s Captain Marvel but they could not disclose which character she would be playing. Ashton is a British actress with a number of roles under her belt, including Doctor Who, and has also appeared alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2016 film Nocturnal Animals.
But Marvel is also looking to fill another mysterious role, according to our friends at The Illuminerdi. The second role is rumored to be a red herring in the film with an early death. Right now, the studio is looking for a Clive Owen-type to fill that role, so clearly more of a household name in terms of actors. Unfortunately, we have no more information regarding the character.
In addition to these major roles, we do know that some familiar faces will be joining Carol Danvers for her second outing. Teyonah Parris, who has become a hit as Monica Rambeau on WandaVision, will be meeting up with Captain Marvel once again. The character is the daughter of Danvers’ partner, Maria, who was portrayed by Lashana Lynch in the first film.
Also appearing in Captain Marvel 2 is Kamala Khan, played by newcomer Iman Vellani. Fans have yet to see Vellani in action, but she will play the lead in the upcoming Ms. Marvel series on Disney+. In the comic books, Kamala is a Pakistani American from New Jersey who finds herself imbued with amazing powers and adopts the moniker of Ms. Marvel in homage of her favorite superhero.
Captain Marvel 2 is slated for release on November 11, 2022. Teyonah Parris can currently be seen on Disney+ in WandaVision, while Ms. Marvel will be available to stream on Disney+ later in 2021.
