The Critics Choice Association (CCA) handed out its first-ever Critics Choice Super Awards, focusing on genre projects in the worlds of science fiction, fantasy, horror, superheroes, and animation, the sorts of genres that don’t normally receive recognition from other major accolades like the Academy Awards and Emmys, or even the regular Critics Choice Awards.
Big winners included Amazon’s The Boys (4 prizes), Disney’s Soul (3), and Hulu and NEON’s Palm Springs (3). The Boys won Best Superhero Series, Best Actor in a Superhero Series for Antony Starr, Best Actress in a Superhero Series for Aya Cash, and Best Villain for Starr. Soul won Best Animated Movie, Best Voice Actor for Jamie Foxx, and Best Voice Actress for Tina Fey. Meanwhile, Palm Springs won Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie, while its leads, Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti won Best Actor and Actress, respectively.
Two versions of Harley Quinn took home prizes, with Margot Robbie winning Best Actress in a Superhero Movie for Birds of Prey, while Kaley Cuoco won Best Voice Actress in an Animated Series for Harley Quinn which originally streamed on DC Universe, but is now based on HBO Max. Robbie’s co-star, Ewan McGregor, landed Best Actor in a Superhero Movie.
Netflix was the outlet that won the most awards — five — with two for Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods (Best Action Movie, Best Actor in an Action Movie for Delroy Lindo), two for BoJack Horseman (Best Animated Series and Best Voice Actor for Will Arnett), and Best Superhero Movie for The Old Guard.
The Star Trek franchise was presented with The Legacy Award, which was accepted by Patrick Stewart and Sonequa Martin-Green. Stewart also scored the award for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series.
