RIP DC Universe Streaming Service: Roku Removes App

Officially, the DC Universe streaming service app is no longer available for use on Roku as of this week. We all knew that the change was coming up, with the DC Universe service being rebranded as DC Universe Infinite in the new year and dropping all of its video streaming content in favor of becoming essentially a digital comics app instead. But no warning was given prior to the application being completely removed from the Roku systems.

While it makes sense that a soon to be shuttered application would be removed from the app store, the service still has a few weeks left before it switches over to its new format. Even users that already had the application downloaded found it removed from their accounts this week. Many have taken to social media to voice their concerns that no warning was given ahead of this change, but those cries seem to be falling on deaf ears.

This removal from the Roku platform comes hot on the heels of the HBO Max app finally making its way to Roku this past week. HBO Max is also owned by Warner Bros. and is essentially replacing the DC Universe streaming service with a wider range of material. All of DC Universe‘s original programs like Titans, Young Justice, Stargirl, Doom Patrol, and Harley Quinn have already made the jump over to HBO Max where further new seasons are being planned. Warner Bros. confirmed earlier this year that they would be retiring the video streaming aspects of the DC Universe application in an effort to focus it more on their extensive back catalog of DC Comics for the subscription service.

DC Universe will soon be rebranded as DC Universe Infinite as of January 21, 2021. With this new name will come a number of new features as the platform shifts to focus entirely on the comic book experience. It is expected that fans will have access to over 24,000 digital comic books on the launch day for DC Universe Infinite. Material is going to be coming from DC Comics’ deep well of original material including comics and graphic novels from over the past 80 years of DC Comics history. Fans will also be able to download an unlimited number of comics to their mobile devices for offline reading if they so desire.

DC Universe Infinite will also be cutting their wait-time in half for new titles, as new books will be coming to the service just six months after they are originally published as physical media, rather than the full year delay that DC Universe has had in place until now. There will also be a series of DC Universe Infinite originals, which will be brand new comic book content created exclusively for this service.

Subscribers will be happy to hear that while the video streaming service will be shutting down in the coming weeks, they will not need to create a new account to access the new updated DC Universe Infinite application as their DC Universe login will simply transfer over. Users will be able to access DC Universe Infinite through DCUniverseInfinite.com on a computer or through the new application for iOS and Android devices. This premium subscription service will set you back just $7.99 a month for unlimited access to all of these digital comics, or you can shave it down to just $6.25 a month by subscribing for a full year in advance at $74.99 a year.

Warner Bros. is hoping to stay in the good graces of those who have already been subscribed to the DC Universe streaming service by offering a voucher redeemable for credit at the DC Shop to anyone who is a current subscriber (even if you sign up now just ahead of the switch!). Monthly subscribers can expect a $10 DC Shop voucher, while those who pulled the trigger on the full year can look forward to a $25 voucher. I guess they want to make sure you get your money’s worth since they’re taking away all of the previously offered video streaming that you signed up for?

DC Universe is set to transition to DC Universe Infinite on January 21, 2021. Until then, enjoy streaming your favorite DC Universe movies and television series while you still can!
