‘Superman & Lois’ Trailer Reveals The Power Of Family

The first trailer for The CW’s Superman & Lois is here and it’s Phantom Zone-y as heck with Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel swooping through a mirror/crystal dimension while images of his wife, Lois Lane (Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch), and two sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin) flicker in the reflective substances. The new clip also shows Superman demonstrating some of his powers, including flight, invulnerability, and heat vision.

But everything we know about Superman & Lois indicates that this won’t be a series about Superman, the crimefighter, but rather Clark Kent, Super Dad. During his narration of the trailer, Hoechlin says:

“We all begin as one version of ourself, but as we grow, life changes us.  Every moment shaping our character, shifting our priorities, stretching every fiber of our being until we think we’ve lost ourselves to the stress of it all… Under the torn fibers is a strong person forged like steel with the courage to fight for those we love. What was lost can be found in family.”

You can watch the trailer below:

One plot point that may have been spoiled by this clip is that one of the Super Sons may be more Brightburn than Smallville. Elsass’ Jonathan seems like the all-American boy next door and early casting descriptions affirmed that. Jonathan (named after Kal-El’s adoptive Earth father) is popular and athletic and Elsass (Little Fires Everywhere) fits that to a T. In the trailer, he appears in a dual image that looks like they could have been taken from Riverdale or All-American. (I’m surprised they didn’t have him take his shirt off.)

But Jordan?  Garfin’s Jordan is named after Kal-El’s birth father, Jor-El from Krypton. While Jonathan is a character in the comics, Jordan is an original creation.

In the trailer, Jordan’s “portrait” shot is a close up of his seething eyes, which pulls back to reveal him with long curly hair, which makes him slightly resemble Finn Wolfhard. His earlier casting description indicated that he is “an introvert, prone to anxiety, who prefers his computer games.” That doesn’t sound too sinister, but the trailer at least hints that there could be something dark bubbling under the surface. (Also, that long hair is definitely channelling Superman’s look in the ’90s comics!)

Superman & Lois also stars Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang; Erik Valdez as Lana’s husband, Kyle Cushing; Inde Navarrett as their daughter Sarah Cushing; Dylan Walsh as Lois’ father, General Samuel Lane; Adam Rayner as Morgan Edge, Lois’ new boss; and Wolé Parks as the show’s antagonist, known only as “The Stranger.” Joselyn Picard will recur as Lana and Kyle’s younger daughter, Sophie Cushing. David Ramsey will appear as John Diggle and will direct at least one episode.  Also set to recur are Sofia Hasmik as Chrissy Beppo and Stacey Farber as Leslie Larr.

Superman & Lois premieres on February 23 at 9 pm, following The Flash, on The CW.
