New Year, new Superman.  Tyler Hoechlin first appeared as Clark Kent/Superman on The CW’s Supergirl in 2016 and was an immediate hit with fans.  This was one of the rare times viewers were served a seasoned experienced live-action Man of Steel, and not a hero at the beginning of his journey.  Hoechlin’s Superman returned for periodic guest appearances on Supergirl and played a large role in last winter’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event.  Now he will take center stage in his own series, Superman & Lois, which premieres next month and it turns out, he’ll be rocking a new Supersuit.

Personally speaking, my first reaction is that this suit seems very influenced by the costume worn by Brandon Routh in Superman Returns— the smaller chest emblem, the way his cape is tucked into his collar.

For comparison, you can see Routh’s garment below:

Obviously, also missing are the old school red trunks.  *Sigh!*

Hoechlin’s new costume has ditched the cape clasps, and his belt forms a “V” rather than being straight across.  His boots aren’t clearly visible, but it looks as though they are a return to the more “classic” style with the small notches at the top, versus the New 52 chunky boots Hoechlin wore earlier.

The new suit was designed by Laura Jean Shannon, who previously worked on Titans and Black Lightning.

Hoechlin discussed his new garb, saying:

“I find that the new suit is representative of the show.  Just as this suit is unique and set apart from the ones that preceded it, the story we’re telling about Clark/Superman at this point in his life is unique and something we’ve never seen before. I appreciate the opportunity to wear the suit and the responsibility that comes with it.

“But it’s always interesting when I’m asked how I feel about ‘my new suit’, because I’ve always felt that the suit doesn’t belong to me; it belongs to everyone that finds some kind of meaning in that suit, in the symbol on the chest. I just happen to be the one wearing it. I come from the world of baseball and a line of coaches that always preached that the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the one on the back. Because when you wear that jersey, it represents not only you, but your entire team, and everyone that has ever worn that jersey that came before you. So when I wear the suit, that’s what it means to me. It represents everything that Superman stands for and has stood for, for almost a century now. And I look forward to carrying on that tradition.”

As for the process of crafting the new suit, Shannon said:

“We got Superman into some custom athletic-inspired Super-Boots as a ‘jumping-off point’ and focused on a new neckline and cape to maximize the billowing and movement we all love to see in the books and films that have defined this character for generations.  A streamlined muscle structure and updated paint job combined with some dynamic design lines and a sculpted armored belt all took his established custom fabric into a new direction to solidify the new look for Superman in Superman & Lois.”

Elizabeth Tulloch portrays Lois Lane on Superman & Lois.  The series follows the couple as they raise twin sons, Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin), in Smallville after Clark is fired from the Daily Planet.  The series also stars Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang, Erik Valdez as Lana’s husband Kyle Cushing, Inde Navarrett as their daughter Sarah Cushing, Dylan Walsh as Lois’ father General Samuel Lane, and Wolé Parks as the show’s antagonist, whose identity is a secret for now.  (Rumors have run the gamut from Superman’s father Jor-El to a parallel universe Lex Luthor to Brainiac to Bizarro.)

What do you think of the new Superman costume?

Superman & Lois premieres on February 23 at 9 pm, following The Flash, on The CW.
