It has taken many long months with subscribers patiently waiting, but WarnerMedia and Roku have finally come to an agreement to bring the HBO Max streaming service to the Roku platform. Beginning December 17th, 2020, HBO Max can stream directly through Roku devices and Roku enabled televisions.
Since its launch in May, HBO Max was only available as an app for limited devices including gaming platforms like the Microsoft Xbox One and Sony Playstation 4, as well as iOS and Android devices. Warner and Roku struggled to come to agreeable terms, keeping the streamer locked out of the Roku platform.
Roku and their enabled devices have over 46 million users. Many have had to use a workaround like Chromecast, gaming platforms, or similar devices to get the service through their computers and tablets and onto bigger screens rather than being able to stream directly like with most other services.
As is often the case, the business terms for this deal were not released. Both companies say they are happy with the terms of the new deal.
The timing of the deal is fortuitous for WarnerMedia. It allows Roku users to get HBO Max ahead of the Christmas Day release of their DC Comics adaptation sequel Wonder Woman 1984. The film will be the first of more than 20 new films that will be launching in both theatres and on the streaming service. All new Warner Brothers releases that were originally planned for theatrical release will available on HBO Max for four weeks after they enter theatres. After the first four weeks, the films will temporarily leave the streaming service to allow their theatrical run to finish out before becoming available again after their home video release.
