Correction: James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy will not be the kick-off to the new cinematic DC Universe.
The director and DC Studios head has announced that his film, which stars David Corenswet in the lead role, will now officially be known as just Superman.
Technically, that makes this the first movie to be named Superman. The original Christopher Reeve picture was called Superman: The Movie.

It was previously hinted that Superman’s famous S-shield would be more stylized, more closely resembling the way it was illustrated in the Mark Waid/ Alex Ross Elseworlds miniseries Kingdom Come. The difference here is that Gunn has kept the traditional yellow/ gold background instead of the Kingdom Come black background.
In addition to Corenswet, the cast of Superman includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor (although, it sounds as though Luthor won’t be this picture’s main antagonist). That will likely be The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría, who, in the comics, is a member of The Authority, a property that Gunn and his partner Peter Safran have already announced will get its own film in this new DCU.
Also part of the Superman cast are Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, and Terence Rosemore as Otis. RUMOR has it, Milly Alcock will make a cameo as Supergirl, but that is just a RUMOR and if this happens, it will likely be in a post-credits scene.
At this point, Superman is scheduled to open on July 11, 2025, one week after Gareth Edwards’ new Jurassic movie, and two weeks before Marvel’s The Fantastic Four. It’s going to be a crowded summer!
