Weekend Box Office (01/26-01/28): ‘Mean Girls’ Remains On Top Of The Worst Weekend Of 2024 So Far

It was a frigid winter weekend at the box office as none of the Top Five entries even made in the double digits and thanks to last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes, there were no new releases to be found.  All movies combined (and that includes those outside of the Top Five and even Top Ten) generated $59 million.  Last year’s weakest frame was September 22-24 when The Nun 2 was in its third weekend and The Expendables 4 tanked in its debut.  That weekend’s overall take was $51.8M, so at least this weekend’s haul was better than that.

In its third weekend, Mean Girls narrowly beat The Beekeeper with $6.7M versus $6.4M.  Mean Girls‘ domestic total is now $60.2M, while The Beekeeper‘s stands at $41.3M.  Both were in their third frames.

Wonka once again occupies the #3 spot, earning an additional $5.8M to bring its tally to $195M.

The #4 and #5 movies continue to swap places week after week.  After taking #4 last weekend, Anyone But You slipped to #5, bumping Migration up to #4.  Migration made an additional $5M bringing its total to $101.1M.  Anyone But You earned $4.65M bringing its total to $71M.  That brings its haul above that of the most recent romantic comedy hit, Ticket to Paradise, starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, which topped out at $68.2M.

You can check out the Top Five below:

    1. Mean Girls (Paramount) – 3-day $6.7M / Total $60.2M/ Wk 3
    2. The Beekeeper (Amazon/ MGM) – 3-day $6.4M/ Total $41.3M/ Wk 3
    3. Wonka (Warner Bros.) – 3-day $5.8M/ Total $195M/ Wk 7
    4. Migration (Illumination/ Universal) – 3-day $5M/ Total $101.1M/ Wk 6
    5. Anyone But You (Sony) – 3-day $4.65M/ Total $71M/ Wk 6
Universal

Next week could see a shot in the arm for cinemas with the release of the spy action comedy Argylle, directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard.  Also included in this star-studded cast are Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson.

But Vaughn’s movies (for instance Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels), while cult favorites and well-respected, don’t necessarily have the widest appeal. Although Argylle looks more accessible to the average filmgoer.  As of right now, it is tracking to open in the teens.

Following that, the Valentine’s/ Presidents’ Day frame will kick things up a little further with the releases of Bob Marley: One Love and Madame Web which are both being eyed to open in the $20M-$30M range, with Bob Marley outpacing Sony’s latest attempt to mine the Spider-Man property without actually using Spider-Man.

Are you looking forward to Argylle?  Or are you waiting for it to warm up before heading back to the multiplex?
