Weekend Box Office (01/19-01/21): ‘Mean Girls’ Continues To “Jingle Bell Rock”

Well, it’s that time. Theater going slows down in the frigid winter months, so studios don’t even bother releasing major pictures. Add to that, the fact that the NFL playoffs are monopolizing the weekend. Not only did nothing break into the Top Five, but there was very little movement except for big drops in grosses. Let’s take a look.

Amazon MGM, Warner Bros., Sony, Illumination/Universal

Mean Girls stayed fetch at #1 but dropped 59% from its debut frame. But $11.7 million was enough to stay on top.

The Beekeeper remained at #2.  This Jason Statham-starring action pic took in another $8.4M.

Like last week, Wonka held the #3 spot, taking in another $6.44M.

The only shift came with the #4 and #5 spots, as the Illumination/Universal animated picture Migration dropped below the Glen Powell/Sydney Sweeney rom-com Anyone But You.

The latter took in another $5.4M, bringing its domestic total to $64.2M. However, worldwide, it has crossed the $100M mark, making this the highest-grossing R-rated comedy since 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby.

Some are eying Anyone But You to see whether or not it launches Sydney Sweeney to the A-list as she is part of the ensemble cast of Madame Web, Sony’s latest attempt to cash in on its Spider-Man license. (That movie can use all the buzz it can get.)

Finally, rounding out the Top Five was Migration.

One movie was put out in wide release this weekend, I.S.S. but that failed to draw an audience and didn’t crack the Top Five.

In fact, it came in at #7 below Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom which isn’t doing great, but it’s drifting toward $400M worldwide. That’s not bad for most movies, but for a major superhero flick — and a sequel to a movie that made over $1 billion — it’s not fantastic. But it’s doing better than a lot of recent comic book flicks, so that’s nice.

Check out this weekend’s Top Five below:

    1. Mean Girls (Paramount) – 3-day $11.7M/ Total $50M/ Wk 2
    2. The Beekeeper (Amazon MGM) – 3-day $8.4M/ Total $31.1M/ Wk 2
    3. Wonka (Warner Bros.) – 3-day $6.44M/ Total $187.1M/ Wk 6
    4. Anyone But You (Sony) – 3-day $5.4M/ Total $64.2M/ Wk 5
    5. Migration (Illumination/Universal) – 3-day $5.3M / Total $94.6M/ Wk 5

Once again, we’re in the winter draught season, so don’t expect many changes next week, but check back to see how things shape up.
