Emmy Awards 2024: ‘Succession’, ‘The Bear’, And ‘Beef’ Clean Up

The 75th Emmy Awards were held on Monday night after being postponed from last year due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Unfortunately, because the Awards were planned for last year, voting took place in August and the qualifying shows had to be released from June 2022 (!) through May 2023, so… that’s a long time ago and a lot of more recent programs didn’t make the cutoff. In fact, The Bear was only eligible for its first season, even though the second has already been released in its entirety.

FX

It doesn’t matter as The Bear still swept the Comedy categories with six wins, tying with Succession which took most of the Drama prizes. Meanwhile, Beef claimed five trophies in the Limited or Anthology categories.

These results mostly mirror those of the Golden Globes which were just handed out with a lot of the same winners in the same races.

Succession scored Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actress for Sarah Snook, Lead Actor for Kieran Culkin, Supporting Actor for Matthew Macfadyen, Directing for the episode “Connor’s Wedding” helmed by Mark Mylod, and Writer for the same episode, by series creator Jesse Armstrong.

The only Drama category that Succession didn’t take was Supporting Actress which went to Jennifer Coolidge for White Lotus.

As for The Bear, it landed Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor for Jeremy Allen White, Supporting Actress for Ayo Edibiri, Supporting Actor for Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Writing for the episode “System” for series creator Christopher Storer, and Directing for the episode “Review” also for Storer.

Lead Actress went to Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary.

Netflix

Beef claimed Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, with Ali Wong taking Lead Actress, Steven Yeun taking Lead Actor.  Writing went to the show’s pilot episode, “The Birds Don’t Sing, They Screech In Pain” penned by the series’ creator, Lee Sung Jin, who also scored the Directing award for the episode “Figures of Light.”

The only awards in this race that went to other projects were Supporting Actress, with Niecy Nash-Betts winning for Dahmer – Monster (remember that?) and Supporting Actor, which went to Paul Walter Hauser for Blackbird.

Another notable win was Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium which won Best Variety Special (Live), making John an official EGOT, having previously landed Grammys, an Oscar, and a Tony. John is only the 19th person to achieve this feat.

In sadder news, after six seasons, Better Call Saul ended with 53 Emmy nominations over that time, but following these Emmys, it has officially never won a single trophy. Now it never will.
