Disney Announces ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Theatrical Film To Be Directed By Jon Favreau

Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed that Star Wars is coming back to the big screen, albeit with a concept that originated on the small screen. Jon Favreau is set to produce and direct The Mandalorian & Grugu, which is obviously based on the TV show he created, The Mandalorian. Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni are also attached as producers. Filoni is also set to direct a Star Wars movie based on the Disney+ shows, most likely focusing on Ashoka Tano and the characters from his animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels.

The Mandalorian & Grugu is set to begin filming in 2024, so it has been in development for a while. A fourth season of The Mandalorian is still in the works, but it isn’t clear which project will arrive first. I would guess the series that will then lead into the movie as a culmination of this story.

Pedro Pascal isn’t confirmed for the film at this point. The fact of the matter is that Pascal doesn’t do much acting in The Mandalorian. Most of the on-screen performances are done by body doubles, with Pascal only providing the voice and appearing in scenes where his helmet is off.

With the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grugu, Favreau stated:

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created.  The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Kennedy added:

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

The last Star Wars movie was 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. In addition to Filoni’s picture, it was announced that another movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey was in development.

Will Star Wars conquer the cinema again  Are you intrigued to see Din Djardin and “Baby Yoda” on the big screen?
