Weekend Box Office (08/11-08/13): ‘Barbenheimer’ Continues To Dominate As ‘Last Voyage Of The Demeter’ Sinks

It continues to be a Barbie world, as the Mattel titan remains on top of the box office, earning an additional $30 million, bringing its domestic total to $522.6M.  Worldwide, it has crossed the one billion mark with all eyes on whether it can become the highest-grossing picture of the year.  As of right now, Barbie has grossed $1.18 billion and has become Warner Bros.’ second-best performing movie, having surpassed Aquaman.  (For the record, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II remains in the #1 spot with $1.35B.)

After falling to #3 last weekend, Oppenheimer is back in the #2 spot with $17.2M, bringing its running total to $262.6M.  Globally, it has made an astounding $600M, making it Christopher Nolan’s 5th-highest-grossing film, surpassing Dunkirk.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Paramount/Nickelodeon

Last weekend’s #4, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, rises to #3, as The Meg 2: The Trench plunges to #4.  The latter was always expected to be front-loaded, so its drop of 57% isn’t a huge surprise.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dropped 48% to earn $71.6M.  Its running total is $71.6M.

The Meg 2 earned $13M bringing its total to $54.4M.

As for The Last Voyage of the Demeter, it sank with a $6M opening.  This follows the tanking of Renfield in April.  This is not a good showing for Dracula flicks.  Heck, add in last year’s dud, Morbius and it doesn’t seem like a great time for any vampire movies.

Last Voyage of the Demeter
Amblin/Universal

Demeter has a lousy 49% Rotten Tomatoes score, with a better 74% audience score.  Via CinemaScore it received a B-, and 66% via PostTrak.

Horror movies tend to flourish in the earlier part of the year (see: M3gan) or around Halloween, but so far this summer, they haven’t been performing well, and that includes the horror-family comedy The Haunted Mansion which has already dropped out of the Top Five after three weeks.

However, Demeter director André Øvredal scored in August of 2019 with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.  So it’s natural that Amblin/Universal would hope that the director could deliver again in a similar opening frame.  Unfortunately, Demeter is rated R and Scary Stories was a PG-13 YA film.  It’s teens that often fuel the success of horror movies, which is why so many of them recently have been PG-13.  It’s also interesting that horror movies tend to skew female, but Demeter is attracting mainly men.

Check out the chart below:

Xolo Maridueña in Blue Beetle
Warner Bros.

Will Barbenheimer finally vacate the top spots next weekend?  It’s possible.  Opening are the Chris Lord/Phil Miller raunchy comedy Strays featuring the voices of Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Will Forte, Isla Fisher, Randall Park, Josh Gad, Harvey Guillén, and more, and WB/DC’s latest Blue Beetle.

There is no telling how Blue Beetle will do.  It doesn’t look good based on DC’s most recent outings, but this one is getting good early reactions.  There is hope that the Latinx community will turn out in full force to support this first live-action superhero movie with a Latino lead.  Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña leads the cast, which also includes Susan Sarandon and George Lopez.

Will you be checking out either Strays or Blue Beetle?
