The much-delayed Sony Spider-Verse quasi-horror flick Morbius predictably swooped to #1 at this weekend’s box office. After drawing huge audiences to Thursday night previews and to Friday official screenings, the film drew steadily smaller audiences as the weekend progressed, which tracks more along the lines of a typical horror movie.
Bad word of mouth can be blamed. People just don’t like this picture and that buzz spread quickly. It has a lousy 17% Rotten Tomatoes critics score. The certified audience score is a more generous 70%. Exiting audiences reacted along the same lines, with its CinemaScore being a tepid C+. Via PostTrak, audiences gave Morbius a 62% positive and 47% recommend.
So all in all, this movie is just okay.
As mentioned, Morbius was delayed many times, most recently to give Spider-Man: No Way Home a wider berth at the box office. But it kind of ended up in a period when many expected blockbusters are dropping. So this did well in its first weekend, it will likely drop to #2 next weekend when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opens. That will be followed by Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore on April 15. And things will really come to a head on May 6, when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness teleports in.
Last week’s surprise success, the Indian historical action flick, RRR, dropped out of the Top Five, but the Japanese anime, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is still hanging in.
