The Golden Globe Awards kicked off the major awards season with its 2023 ceremony. The show was not broadcast last year, partly due to the pandemic but also due to controversies surrounding perceived racism and bribery. Nevertheless, the Golden Globes returned and may forecast what we can expect from the Oscars later this year. The Golden Globes have never been the most prestigious award, but it’s always fun to tune in to watch the biggest stars in Hollywood get drunk onscreen and see what they say when they take the stage.
Steven Spielberg took home Best Director for his film The Fabelmans which scored Best Motion Picture – Drama. This picture is a love letter to cinema, so it’s easy to see why it resonated with people in the industry. It may also do so when it comes to the Oscars.
Spielberg won a Golden Globe last year in the Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy category for West Side Story. That film also earned prizes for two of its stars, Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose.
The Fabelmans is a “safe” film. It’s heartwarming, it’s charming. When it comes to the Oscars, that may give it a leg up over competition like Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once, as those pictures may be too quirky for older viewers.
However, at the Golden Globes, where Drama and Musical/Comedy movies are separated, The Banshees of Inisherin managed to take home Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy, besting Everything Everywhere All At Once. The Banshees of Inisherin also won Best Screenplay (a category that is not divided between genres), while Colin Farrell took home Best Actor – Musical/Comedy.
However, the acting in Everything Everywhere All At Once was recognized with Michelle Yeoh winning Best Actress – Musical/Comedy and Ke Huy Quan scoring Best Supporting Actor – Any. This follows Quan’s win at the Gotham Awards in the same category, and he has now emerged as the front-runner for the Academy Awards.
Quan’s was the first award given out at the ceremony. The actor gave a tearful acceptance speech referencing his long retirement from acting after his appearances in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Goonies, and a stint on the sitcom Head of the Class. He thanks the Daniels, the directors and screenwriters of the film, for taking a chance on him after such a long hiatus.
Yeoh is a lock to get an Oscar nomination for Lead Actress, but she most likely won’t beat Cate Blanchett, who took home the Best Actress – Drama Golden Globe for Tár. Blanchett is widely seen as the front-runner for the Oscars.
For months now, Brendan Fraser has been seen as the front-runner for Best Actor for his performance in The Whale, however, at the Golden Globes, he lost out to Austin Butler for Elvis.
Butler’s performance is stellar. He will likely get nominated along with Fraser for the Oscars, but some wonder if this upset is due to Fraser’s accusation that a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Accusation (who determine the Golden Globe nominees and winners) groped him at a press event and his declaration that he wouldn’t attend the ceremony whether he was nominated or not. Fraser is still considered the front-runner for the Oscars.
However, Butler’s win skews along the lines of the victories of Spielberg and The Fabelmans, in that Elvis also skews older and is more traditional (which is saying a lot considering that it was directed by Baz Luhrman). There are a lot of older voters in the Academy Awards pool, and they may gravitate toward Butler and Elvis as a whole, suddenly making this picture’s odds much better than previously anticipated.
Angela Bassett nabbed Best Supporting Actress – Any for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, making her the first performer to win an acting award for a Marvel Cinematic Universe project outside of the Saturn Awards. Bassett has been getting awards buzz since Wakanda Forever came out, but it always seemed like a longshot as the Marvel movies are widely considered “popcorn” fluff.
In 1993, Bassett was nominated for an Academy Award for playing Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It, although she didn’t win. Now, it is quite possible that she could get her second nomination and maybe even a win.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio scored Best Picture – Animated and Del Toro gave a speech in which he declared that animation was not a genre but a medium. This picture has been a frontrunner for this prize, although the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has given it some competition. However, this win makes Pinocchio a practical shoo-in for the Oscars.
In the television categories, House of the Dragon won Best Drama Series, while Abbott Elementary took home Best Comedy Series. Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson nabbed Best Actress – Comedy, while Tyler James Williams scored Best Supporting Actor – Any.
Yellowstone‘s Kevin Costner grabbed the Best Actor- Drama prize (another no-show, though due to flooding), while Jeremy Allen White scored Best Actor – Comedy, and Zendaya won Best Actress – Drama for Euphoria. (Zendaya is another star that boycotted the ceremony.) Ozark‘s Julia Garner took home Best Supporting Actress – Any.
HBO’s White Lotus won Best Miniseries/Anthology/TV Movie, with its star Jennifer Coolidge taking home Best Supporting Actress in that category. Best Lead Actress went to Amanda Seyfried (another boycott) for The Dropout, with Evan Peters landing Best Lead Actor for Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Paul Walter Hauser scoring for Best Supporting Actor for Black Bird.
