The COVID-19 Omicron variant is disrupting the entertainment industry in many ways, from shutting down production on films and TV shows to keeping audiences from heading to theaters, and now, basically ruining awards shows.  Most went virtual last year, but this year, the Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association pretty much eschewed any attempt to present a typical show and instead simply announced the winner in a celebrity-free broadcast.

Succession dominated the Drama TV categories, winning Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Jeremy Strong, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Sarah Snook.  Meanwhile, Mj Rodriguez (pictured above) made history as the first transgender performer to win Best Actress in the Drama category.

O Yeong-su in Squid Game
Netflix

In the Comedy category, HBO’s Hacks won Best Series and Jean Smart won Best Actress.  Apple TV+ got some hype as Jason Sudeikis won for his leading role on Ted Lasso.  Meanwhile, Netflix’s buzzy Korean hit Squid Game earned O Yeong-su a win for Best Supporting Actor.  Michael Keaton won Best Actor in a Limited Series, while The Underground Railroad won Best Miniseries.

In the movie categories, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and Jane Campion’s Power of the Dog ruled.

West Side Story may not have been a hit at the box office, but the HFPA named it as the Best Movie (Musical/Comedy), while newcomer Rachel Zegler won Best Actress, and Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress.

Power of the Dog took home Best Movie (Drama), while Campion won Best Director, and Kodi Smit-McPhee scored Best Supporting Actor.

Andrew Garfield as Jonathan Larson in Tick... Tick... Boom
Netflix

In the Drama categories, Will Smith won Best Actor for King Richard and Nicole Kidman won Best Actress for Being the Ricardos.  For Comedy/Musical, Andrew Garfield won for tick… tick… BOOM!.  Kenneth Branagh landed Best Screenplay for Belfast.  Encanto was named Best Animated Movie, beating out fellow Disney products Luca and Raya and the Last Dragon among others.

Though many genre fans were pulling for Dune, which was nominated in multiple categories, it only took home one Golden Globe, for Hans Zimmer’s score.

The Golden Globes can, at times, be a decent predictor for the Academy Awards and the Emmys.  Although the winners don’t always match, the nominations are typically similar.
