Henry Cavill Quits ‘The Witcher’ For ‘Superman’; Liam Hemsworth Takes Over In Season 4

This is how committed Henry Cavill is to play Superman. He has officially QUIT his hit Netflix series The Witcher which he has starred on for three seasons because it conflicts with whatever plans he has to star in the Warner Bros. DCEU franchise.

Even so, Netflix has renewed the show for a fourth batch of episodes. The role of Geralt of Rivia is being recast with Liam Hemsworth.  The third season, which has already been filmed, is expected to be released in the summer of 2023 to allow for post-production.

In the meantime, fans of The Witcher can look forward to a prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, which premiers on Christmas day, December 25.  Cavill doesn’t appear in this series, which instead stars Sophia Brown and Michelle Yeoh.

***SPOILER ALERT*** Although this is common knowledge to pretty much everyone, if you are still avoiding SPOILERS for Black Adam, turn back now or proceed with caution.***

Henry Cavill returned in the role of Superman for Warner Bros./DC Comics’ latest feature Black Adam in a post-credits scene.  He previously played the Man of Steel in 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and 2017’s Justice League, as well as HBO Max’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which was an extended remix of the original release.  Body doubles have stood in for Cavill in Shazam! and The Peacemaker.

Last week, Cavill took to social media to assert that he was indeed returning in upcoming WB/DC movies.

The first season of The Witcher, which consisted of eight episodes, premiered on Netflix in December 2019.  The second series, also eight episodes, arrived two years later in December 2021.  An animated tie-in movie was released in August 2021, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

The series also stars Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, an elven sorceress, Freya Allan as Ciri, a princess who falls under the care of Geralt and evolves into his sidekick of sorts, and Joey Batey as the bard Jaskier, another sidekick of sorts.

Liam Hemsworth is best known for co-starring in The Hunger Games franchise.  He has also starred in The Expendables 2, The Muppets, Independence Day: Resurgence, and more.  Most recently, he was seen in the Peacock original Poker Face.  He will next appear in another Netflix project, Lonely Planet, a movie that also stars Laura Dern and Diana Silvers.

How do you feel about this shakeup?  Are you excited to see Henry Cavill back as Superman?  Even if it’s at the cost of losing him as Geralt?  Will Liam Hemsworth live up to Cavill’s portrayal?
