Following the release of Black Adam, with its poorest-kept secret post-credits scene in comic book movie history, Henry Cavill took to social media to confirm that he is returning to the role of Superman in the DCEU.

As he wrote:

A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded.”

In a separate video, he stated:

“I wanted to wait the weekend before posting this because I wanted to give you a chance to watch Black Adam.”

***SPOILER ALERT: Although even those that haven’t seen Black Adam already know this, just in case, if you haven’t and don’t want SPOILERS, turn back now.***

Cavill reprised the role of Superman in a post-credits scene in Black Adam.  This is his first return in the role since 2017’s Justice League.  His stunt double, Ryan Handley wore the suit in Shazam! in 2019, but was shot from the neck down.  As recently as 2020, Cavill has asserted that he was not ready to give up the cape.  It appears that the old leadership of Warner Bros. wanted to write him out, but now that the company has been bought out by Discovery, the new leadership seems interested in seeing him carry on.

Cavill made his debut as Superman/Clark Kent in 2013’s Man of Steel directed by Zack Snyder.  The film was decently-received and made money, but maybe not as much as WB had hoped.  Instead of giving him a proper solo sequel, the studio, which was eager to tap into the glorious cash flow that Disney saw with its Marvel Cinematic Universe, decided to make a movie that would kickstart its own comic book shared universe with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, also directed by Snyder.  That was followed by Justice League which was… kinda directed by Snyder.

Since then, Cavill attempted to launch another franchise with The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and joined an existing brand in Mission: Impossible – Fallout.  He had a small role in Netflix’s Enola Holmes and looks to have a larger role in its sequel, simply called Enola Holmes 2, out on November 4.  But his biggest career step was starring in another Netflix project, the hit series The Witcher, which is going into its third season.

Man of Steel never got a proper solo sequel.  Batman V Superman inserted Ben Affleck as Batman (a role which he has seemingly relinquished) and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.  Cavill’s Superman kind of got the shaft, which is a shame,  Superman isn’t as edgy as characters like Batman.  He’s not funny like Deadpool.  It’s a tricky character to pull off, but Cavill did a good job in all of his stabs at the character and many would agree that he deserves another shot in a solo movie.

This was just a tease and WB hasn’t made any official announcements.  No writer or director appear to be attached.

Are you excited to see Henry Cavill back in the blue suit again?
