Despite great reviews, The Suicide Squad flopped hard at the box office, but director James Gunn turned things around with the spin-off HBO Max miniseries The Peacemaker featuring John Cena as the ridiculous hero he originated in The Suicide Squad which turned into a massive streaming hit.
Gunn really made his name directing two Marvel hits, Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. He returned to helm Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
But now word has emerged that Gunn is working on at least one, possibly two new DC projects for Warner Bros. And why not? After he was temporarily fired from Marvel after some old, problematic tweets resurfaced, WB basically gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wanted with the DC Universe. That’s probably why they allowed him to make another Suicide Squad movie so soon after David Ayer’s disappointing 2016 theatrical installment.
We already knew that Gunn had another The Suicide Squad Disney+ series spinoff in the works, to star Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and it looks as though a second season of The Peacemaker is also on its way.
Reportedly, Gunn and Shazam! and Aquaman producer Peter Safran are in talks with WB for a new “mystery” movie, possibly two, that Gunn will helm.
There was no further information, but it should be interesting to see what Gunn has chosen considering that he gravitates toward D-list characters like TDK and Polka-Dot Man. Would he actually be interested in directing say a Green Lantern movie? Or could we look forward to Rag-Man: The Movie?  Killer Moth?
