SDCC is back, and the first major production to occupy Hall H is Paramount Pictures’ Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Among the stars in attendance were Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Sophia Lillis, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, and Justice Smith. Together, they introduced the first trailer for their much-talked-about fantasy film.
“Who Needs Heroes, When You Have Thieves?”
The trailer will bring a big smile to D&D players. It shows off a lot of familiar elements of the game and pairs it with the right amount of comedic tone. That comedic tone was exemplified during the panel when it was joked that Grant was a long-time fan of the role-playing game. Rodriguez quipped back, “I think you mixed it up with S&M.” Grant replied, “She is not wrong.”

What We Know About Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Not much about the plot itself was revealed at the panel. From the trailer alone, we know our thieves did an “oops” and accidentally unleashed “the greatest evil the world has ever known” and have to work together to fix it. As producer Jeremy Latcham says, “There is a lot of questing in the movie, I can tell you that.”
We also know that directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are working hard to keep the magic of the game intertwined within the film. Daley teased those in Hall H that “there are a ton of Easter eggs loaded in [the movie].”
And he should know! Daley has been an avid DnD player since he was 14 years old when he was a cast member of Freaks & Geeks. As he puts it, “Anyone who plays D&D knows it’s not just a game. It is the feeling you get when you play the game.” It’s good knowing that Daley gets the game, especially since he wrote the screenplay with Goldstein and Michael Gilio.

A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure.
It will be a while before we can roll the dice on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The film is slated to be in theaters on March 3, 2023. Until then, expect Geek Anything to get you leveled up as more teasers come out along the way.
