Chris Pine is in talks to star in Paramount and eOne’s long-in-development film adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming, and directed the comedies Vacation and Game Night, are set to helm and wrote the most recent script, based on an earlier draft by Michael Gilio. (Chris McKay was previously set to direct.)
Nothing is known about the film, its tone, storylines, or characters, as D&D isn’t a set “thing” and can vary wildly from one group of players to the next.
A previous film adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons was released in 2020, with Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans starring. But that flick came and went with little fanfare. The movie rights to the tabletop game have shifted around. At one time, Warner Brothers planned to make a film version with Rob Letterman (Detective Pikachu) directing, and Ansel Elgort attached to star. But the rights are now at Paramount, which has an overall deal with Hasbro, the toy manufacturer which currently owns D&D.
Even though it seems as though the movie is just in the scripting stage, Paramount has already given it a release date– May 27, 2022. It had previously been slotted for November 2021.
Chris Pine can next be seen in Wonder Woman 1984, which premieres in the U.S. on Christmas Day, next Friday, December 25. It will be released simultaneously in open theaters and on HBO Max. Pine plays Steve Trevor, the same role that he played in the first Wonder Woman in 2017. Patty Jenkins directed and the film stars Gal Gadot, with Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal as the villains, Barbara Minerva/The Cheetah and Maxwell Lord, respectively.
After that, Pine will be seen in the military-themed movie Violence of Action. He is now filming the 1950s-set Don’t Worry Darling, with Olivia Wilde directing and co-starring, along with Florence Pugh, Nick Kroll, Gemma Chan, and Harry Styles.
Dungeons & Dragons is scheduled to open on May 27, 2022. Check back for more news as it arrives!
