The Axe Of Zaslav Guts The CW: ‘Charmed’, ‘4400’, ‘Roswell, New Mexico’, And ‘Naomi’ Among 8 Cancelled Shows

Charmed
The CW

Warner Bros. was bought out by Discovery last year and it looks as though the new parent company is making major changes. It is believed that Discovery is looking to sell off The CW entirely, but before that, it is overhauling the network entirely. It has just been announced that Charmed, Roswell New Mexico, Legacies, Dynasty, Naomi, The Republic of Sarah, In The Dark, and 4400 have been canceled.

This follows the already announced cancellations of Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow.

The Power Of Three, You’ll No Longer See

Charmed was a reboot of the early 1990s-2000s series, with a Latina leading cast. It lasted for four seasons. In its last, Charmed was averaging 650, 000 viewers and a 0.1 rating, which includes playbacks (DVR). Of all of The CW’s dramas, it ranked 17 out of 19.

Charmed starred Madeleine Mantock as Macy Vaughn, Melonie Diaz as Mel Vera, Sarah Jeffery as Maggie Vera, and Rupert Evans as their Whitelighter Harry Greenwood. Mantock departed the series after Season 3 and was replaced by Lucy Barrett as Michaela.

Roswell Will Keep Its Secrets

Roswell, New Mexico
The CW

Also getting the chop is Roswell, New Mexico, another reboot of a past CW show. Like Charmed, this series is ending after four seasons, and it also featured a Latinx-fronted cast.

Roswell, New Mexico was largely written by Carina Adly MacKenzie and directed by Julie Plec. Like the original Roswell series, this was based on the YA novels penned by Melinda Metz, which centered on extraterrestrials blending into society.

Like most CW shows, Roswell, New Mexico featured an ensemble cast. This one was fronted by Jeanine Mason as Liz Ortecho, Nathan Dean Parsons as Max Evans, Michael Vlamis as Michael Guerin, Lily Cowles as Isobel Evans, Tyler Blackburn as  Alex Manes, and Michael Trevino and Kyle Valenti.

The Remaining Sci-Fi Shows That Got The Ax

Also canceled after four seasons is Legacies, a follow-up to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Julie Plec also created this series. Danielle Rose Russell fronted the cast as Hope Mikaelson, a being that descended from vampires, werewolves, and witches, attending the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted.

Naomi
The CW

Naomi and The 4000 are canceled after just one season. Naomi was based on a character from DC Comics, although this series was not connected to The CW’s Arrowverse.  This program was developed for television by acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay with Jill Blankenship. Kaci Walfall starred as the titular character.

4400 was a reboot of the series The 4400 which ran on the USA Network for four seasons from 2004-07. Riverdale alum, Ariana Jackson, developed this iteration. The cast included Brittany Adebumola, Joseph David-Jones, Ireon Roach, and TL Thompson. Like the original series, 4400 focused on 4400 individuals that vanished within the last hundred years only to return all at once in the modern day without having aged a day.

Other Cancellations

Dynasty was canceled after five seasons. The Republic of Sarah only lasted for one. The fourth and final season of In The Dark will premiere on June 6.

In their place, The CW has ordered to series the Batman-based Gotham Knights, Walker: Independence, based on the series Walker. The latter stars CW mainstay Jared Padalecki who previously co-headlined Supernatural, and the Supernatural prequel The Winchesters.
