The Golden Globes Nominate ‘Dune’, ‘Squid Game’, And ‘WandaVision’ – Full Nominees List

Netflix

Netflix’s unlikely smash, Squid Game cemented its place as a phenomenon by scoring three nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association‘s Golden Globes.  Squid Game is nominated for Best Television Series – Drama, against Lupin, The Morning Show, Pose, and Succession.  Lee Jung-jae is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama against Brian Cox (Succession), Billy Porter (Pose), Jeremy Strong (Succession), and Omar Sy (Lupin), while O Yeong-su is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, against Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Kieran Culkin (Succession), Mark Duplass (The Morning Show), and Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso).

Meanwhile, both Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany were nominated for their work in WandaVision, but surprisingly, Kathryn Hahn was not nominated in the supporting category.  This marked the only representation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Golden Globes, like the Academy Awards, are set up to celebrate the highest quality in television and film, so there aren’t many blockbusters in the film categories.  The Best Motion Picture – Drama nominees are Belfast, CODA, Dune, King Richard, The Power of the Dog while the Best Motion Picture – Comedy nominees are Cyrano, Don’t Look Up, Licorice Pizza, Tick, Tick… Boom!, andWest Side Story.

Dune and arguably West Side Story are the only big-budget popcorn flicks in the bunch.  Both directors, Denis Villeneuve and Steven Spielberg are up for the Best Director prize.  However, neither film is nominated for Best Screenplay.  Dune doesn’t have any other nominations, but West Side Story earned two acting nominations for Rachel Zegler for Lead Actress and Ariana DeBose for Supporting Actress.

Sometimes– but not always– the Golden Globes can predict which projects get nominated for the Academy Awards.  But the two accolades are quite different.  For one thing, the Oscars don’t divide up Drama and Comedy.  The Academy Award nominations should arrive early next year.

The Golden Globe winners will be announced on January 9, although the format for the show has yet to be determined.
