It should come as no surprise that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is getting a sequel… I mean, it is a Marvel movie. But it is now official.  Destin Daniel Cretton who directed and co-wrote the first movie will return. This is part of an overall deal that Cretton just signed with Disney to create new content for Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective.

This includes creating a new series for Disney+. Three guesses what that is! Considering that the post-credits scene of Shang-Chi teased the return of The Ten Rings with Meng’er Zhang’s Xu Xialing assuming control of the criminal empire, it’s pretty much a given that this will be that show.

As of right now, Shang-Chi is the highest-grossing movie of 2021, earning $224.5 million domestically and $431.9 million worldwide. Simu Liu starred as the titular hero with Awkwafina as his BFF Katy.

Tara Duncan, president of Freeform and Hulu’s Onyx Collective declared:

“Destin is a powerhouse storyteller with impeccable taste in material. As we continue to expand our roster, Destin’s unique voice will help usher in an exciting slate of content for our global audience.”

Marvel Studios president added:

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”

Finally, Cretton stated:

“Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories & build new worlds with this community,”

Onyx Collective is dedicated to giving voices to creators of color and underrepresented groups.

Are you excited that a Shang-Chi sequel is in the works?  What about a potential spinoff show?
