As the new trailer to Morbius touts, this film introduces a new “Marvel Legend” and that the “line between hero and villain will be broken.” Like Venom, Morbius focuses on an anti-hero from the comic book canon of Spider-Man, although we still don’t quite know how Spider-Man will fit into films after Spider-Man: No Way Home.
But one thing that is made clear in the Morbius trailer is that at least this film takes place in the same universe as Venom, which does not appear to be the MCU as one character refers to an event in San Francisco where the Venom movies take place. It also sounds like that was the first superhuman event that these people have ever experienced. There is also a more direct reference to Venom, but I’ll save that for after the video. (Also the post-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, pretty clearly established that those pictures aren’t set in the MCU.)
We also get a look at Michael Morbius’ superpowers, which include super strength, speed, bat-like radar, and flight. But the cost of these enhancements is a vampire-like weakness to sunlight and a thirst for blood.
Yes, after one character asked Morbius who he is, he replies “I… am… Venom!… I’m just kidding. It’s Dr. Michael Morbius, at your service.” So once again, it’s clear that this is a shared universe and that means that these characters could cross over at some point.
Michael Keaton pops up again, and says “Hey, Dr. Michael. You and I should stay in touch.” This could be a reference to his role as Adrian Toomes a.k.a. The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming… but that took place in the MCU… right?
Daniel Espinosa directed Morbius, which stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Jared Harris as an unnamed mentor to Morbius, Al Madrigal as Alberto Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson as Simon Stroud.
After delays, Morbius will finally hit theaters on January 28, 2022.
