COVID-19 isn’t going away just yet, despite there being a vaccine. Sony’s Morbius, starring Jared Leto, was slated to be released on March 19, but with theaters still closed in many areas, and audiences still mostly avoiding the ones that are open, the studio has pushed this picture back a hefty seven months. It is now scheduled for release on October 8, 2021.

Considering that Morbius is horror-adjacent, this might be a better date for it anyway as it falls closer to Halloween. Morbius was originally supposed to be released in July 2020. The film wrapped filming in June 2019 and post-production was completed later that year, so it is ready to go. It’s now only a matter of getting it to audiences.

Morbius is part of Sony’s ambitious plan to craft a shared universe based on the characters from Marvel’s Spider-Man comic books. It takes place in the same universe as Venom and based on the trailer, it appears that this is also the same world of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Of course, the latter was part of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, while the former was… not? Right?

Fans have clamored for Sony’s Spidey-based films to be considered as extensions of the wildly popular MCU, but it seemed that the studios were opposed to this. Things came to a head when Sony announced that it would not collaborate with Disney and Marvel Studios for the third Tom Holland Spider-Man installment, but after massive public backlash, Sony and Disney/Marvel worked out some sort of agreement. But Morbius will be the first project to arrive after this, so it remains to be seen just how this picture connects to Spider-Man and/or the MCU… if it does at all.

Sony has not yet announced a postponement for Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It is still scheduled for release on June 25, 2021, but with Morbius‘ drastic delay, it would come as no surprise if Venom also gets pushed back.

The untitled third Spider-Man flick is currently scheduled for release on December 17, 2021.

Morbius was directed by Daniel Espinosa. In addition to Leto, the film stars Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Tyrese Gibson as Simon Stroud, with Jared Harris, and Al Madrigal. Michael Keaton will also make an appearance, possibly as Adrian Toomes, The Vulture, his character in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Are you disappointed that Morbius has been delayed yet again?
