How’s this for a “Holiday Special?”  Get ready to ring in the New Year with some Star Wars goodness, as Disney+ and Lucasfilm LTD have announced that the first spin-off from The MandalorianThe Book of Boba Fett, will premiere on the streaming service on December 29, 2021.  The spin-off was teased in a post-credits scene in the final episode of The Mandalorian Season 2.

Boba Fett has been a fan favorite character ever since he first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back back in 1980.  He was a bounty hunter hired by Darth Vader to help capture the main Rebels in exchange for Han Solo, whom he delivered to Jabba the Hutt.  He was unceremoniously “killed” in Return of the Jedi after he fell into the Sarlac Pit, but subsequent fiction– comics and novels– revealed that he had survived, although whether or not that was canon was unclear.

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t seen Season 2 of The Mandalorian, the following information contains SPOILERS so proceed with caution or turn back now!

However, on The Mandalorian, it was established officially that YES he had survived, although his Mandalorian armor fell into the hands of local lawman Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant).  However, by the end of Season 2, Boba Fett (Temura Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) had gunned down Bib Fortuna and taken over control of the Tattoine underworld.

This scene was followed by the tag: “THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT…. COMING DECEMBER 2021”  Now, Disney and Lucasfilm are making good on that promise.

Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Robert Rodriguez directed episodes of The Book of Boba Fett, with Rodriguez reportedly helming multiple installments.  Favreau, Filoni, Rodriguez, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson serve as executive producers.
