Nearly a month ago, it was rumored that the Disney+ Ahsoka TV series, starring Rosario Dawson in the title role, was looking to cast a live-action version of Sabine Wren, the popular Mandalorian freedom fighter who first appeared on the animated Star Wars Rebels. It appears that this rumor has since been confirmed.
It was also stated at the time that the three actors being considered were Lana Condor (Netflix’s To All the Boys franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse), Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The 100), and model Havana Rose Liu (Mayday, the upcoming No Exit).
Now this next bit is also RUMOR so take it with a grain of salt, but it originates from Knight Edge Media, which has delivered some Star Wars scoops in the past that have turned out to be true.
The outlet reports that Tati Gabrielle has emerged as the frontrunner for the role, but sadly it isn’t due to her acting circles around the other two or her undeniable chemistry with Dawson. It’s more like default.
According to Knight Edge Media, Liu has declined the role.
As for Condor, her star has risen following the To All The Boys franchise and she just seems too busy. She is set to film the female buddy comedy Girls Night, costarring Brianna Hildebrand (yes, nerds, that’s a team-up between Jubilee and Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and another Netflix project, the miniseries Boo, Bitch, which she is also executive producing.
So that leaves Gabrielle. But keep in mind, her name has been in the mix from the beginning, so Disney was already considering her for the role. Clearly, they saw something special in her.
Gabrielle is best known for playing Prudence Night on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina which recently released its fourth and final part. Before that, she played Gaia on The 100. She appears in the upcoming Uncharted movie, playing a character named Braddock, and she will costar in the third season of Netflix’s You.
Ahsoka is currently being written by Dave Filoni who ushered in both Ahsoka and Sabine Wren while he was spearheading the animated Star Wars universe with The Clone Wars and Rebels. He has since crossed over to live-action with The Mandalorian which he produces. He wrote and directed the episode “The Jedi” which introduced Dawson’s Ahsoka.
Beyond that, not much is known about Ahsoka, but it is strongly suspected that Grand Admiral Thrawn may make his live-action debut on the series as well. It’s also possible Ezra Bridgers may appear, as, at the end of Rebels, Ahsoka and Sabine went on a quest to find him.
